Collect your Backyard Chicken Eggs in STYLE

There are MANY benefits to having Backyard Chickens but the #1 reason most people get into it is for the eggs!! There is something incredibly satisfying about caring for animals and having them, in turn, provide you with a household essential aka chicken egg gathering. It is important to collect chicken eggs everyday once they start laying (esp. in extreme temperatures). If your chickens free-range – it may be more difficult to “find” their stash of eggs everyday as they LOVE to find secluded places. Whether YOU, your kids or someone else is the daily collector . . . as with anything else in life – it is ALWAYS more fun to do when you get to “wear” or use something fun. So, make the small investment. Little hands usually struggle to carry more than a few eggs at a time.

I will never forget my cute little 3 year old neighbor who wanted SO badly to collect the eggs on his own. He came to my back door with 3 eggs in his small hands – and while trying to open the door – accidentally smashed an egg and felt SO bad. Accidents happen – but help prevent them by providing other FUN ways. His face when he placed the eggs on the skelter was PRICELESS: utter excitement, wonder and joy.

Chicken Egg Collecting Apron

This adorable apron can be ordered in a Kid, Teen or Adult size and holds 3,6 or 12 eggs. I have an adult sized one and my kids will happily wrap it around themselves and go collect the eggs.

If you like to sew or want to DIY an egg collecting apron – Sewing To the Moon has a FREE and easy pattern & tutorial to make your own HERE.

Chicken Egg Gathering Basket

Baskets work GREAT to collect Chicken Eggs – every now and then I’ll end up with one that cracks – but it is RARE!! If you are a thrifter – visit your local thrift store and grab a basket. Choose a wire or a wood chicken egg gathering basket. It honestly doesn’t matter – it’s about preference. Just make sure it has a handle for the Little Hands who want to help!  Here are a few from Amazon that are Adorable!!

This vintage style wire basket is PERFECT for your daily egg collection. It’s oval shape and wooden handles will go with any decor and be easy to carry by big or little hands.

How cute are these wooden fruit baskets? They would collect chicken eggs in STYLE for sure!! They come in a set of two. I can think of SOOO many things that I could do with these: Halloween Candy Buckets, Easter Egg Gathering, Harvesting Veggies in the garden, etc. PLUS, they come in 2 other colors: raw wood and a farmhouse white.

Egg Storage – Kitchen Counter

Once you’ve collected your yummy chicken eggs . . . and you bring them inside – how do you store them? The way you store them is a reflection of YOU & who you are (your STYLE).   Chicken eggs can be stored on your counter for 2 weeks (UNWASHED!) and 3 months (UNWASHED) in the fridge. So, first let’s start with HOW do you store them on your counter . . . Because they can only stay on your counter for 2 weeks – I use an egg skelter.

First of all, it is STILL fun to set the eggs at the top of the skelter and watch it race down to “bump” into the next egg. It never gets old. My kids esp. like this feature. Everyone who comes into my kitchen comments on the skelter.  They ALL want to try it.  Secondly, I always use the eggs from the bottom – so I never question if my eggs are fresh. Every now and then the “bump” will cause a small egg fracture – but it only happens periodically – not something I worry about.

Egg 2 Tier Storage Tray with Erasable Chalkboard Label – this beautiful tray will hold 36 eggs on the top tier and either more eggs or other items in the bottom drawer.  Seriously, WHO wouldn’t want this on their counter – it is SO cute!!

Bamboo Egg Storage Tray – can be used in the fridge or on the counter. Will hold 24 eggs. Eco-friendly and space saving – great for any minimalist space or in a small kitchen.

Egg Storage – In the Fridge

IF your eggs last over 2 weeks on your counter (Mine RARELY do!)- you’ll want to put them (UNWASHED) in the Fridge. There are lots of ways to store eggs in the fridge. They can stay in your fridge for up to 3 months (as long as you haven’t washed them!)

When chickens lay eggs – the outer coating of the egg is called the BLOOM – this has some all-natural antibacterial qualities to it that help it to stay good – once you wash this away – that protection is gone – so DO NOT wash your eggs when you bring them in from the coop. Even when they are covered in chicken poop – RESIST!!!

This Ceramic Egg Tray is cute and functional. It can be used in the fridge or on the counter and holds 12 eggs. Easy to reuse and wash when eggs crack or break – this beats an egg carton anyday!! I have two of these that I use in my fridge to house extras (esp. in the winter when my girls slow down their laying – this comes in handy!)

This Semi-Enclosed Stackable Egg Holder will house 36 eggs and is auto-scrolling (meaning they automatically roll from the back to the front – so you can be sure you are using the oldest ones first. Easy to clean and collect chicken eggs in your refrigerator.

If you are partial to traditional egg cartons – this Set of 2 Plastic, Stackable Refrigerator Bins might be for you. They simply eliminate the paper egg carton and give you reusable, washable ones in a design you are already comfortable with.

Chicken Egg Gathering Conclusion

STYLE is simply a way of expressing yourself or doing things. Your STYLE may differ from mine – and that is perfectly fine!! In fact, it’d be weird and awkward if we all did things the same! Embrace your STYLE and do some chicken egg gathering with a flair that screams YOU!!

TOP 15 Backyard Coop Essentials on Amazon

WHO doesn’t love to use Amazon to order the big (& little) things you need around the house?(like chicken coop essentials?) I mean, It is almost a no-brainer when you can find it cheaper online AND they deliver it to your front door. Am I right and PRIME is a current OBSESSION of mine. I love going to visit my local feed store. But, I find myself ordering more and more for my Chicken Coop from Amazon. It has ALL my favorite things – and often MUCH cheaper . . . Here I am sharing with you my backyard coop essentials.

TOP 15 Backyard Coop Essentials – Here is the COUNTDOWN . . .

15. Little Trees Car Air Freshener – vanillaroma

This product is one of those little secrets you don’t want to live without. I hang these air fresheners from the ceiling in my coop and replace them every 30 days. It keeps the smell at bay and helps your neighbors forget that you even HAVE a backyard coop. (talk about essentials!)

14. Happy Trees Premium Hemp Animal Bedding – 6.6lbs

Hemp is one of my favorite things to put on the floor of the coop. Hemp helps to prevent bad smells in the coop by neutralizing ammonia odors and keeps flies at bay. It is dust-free – which is a great advantage as dust is one of the biggest causes of respiratory problems in your birds. But, my FAVORITE thing is that it is very absorbent and it helps break down chicken poop. DO NOT underestimate how AMAZING this is for your coop! I keep some in my shed at ALL times.

My coop is on top of dirt/rock as I am in Arizona. So, I throw Hemp around in my coop at least once a week – and it makes ALL the difference.

13. Sweet Pdz Coop Refresher 10lb bag – –

I should invest in this stuff. I use it in my run, my nesting boxes and under the roost in my coop. This stuff is the FIRST line of defense in re: odor. I usually buy multiple bags at a time and I NEVER let my supply run out.  Grab some now because I promise you will fall in love with it.

12. Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with THE MOTHER

Keep the water in your waterer cleaner – and keep the sludge/growth at bay by adding. I still clean my waterer each time I refill it – but I am always impressed with the small amount. I add a capful or two to each 5 gallon fill.

11. Chicken Egg Collecting Apron – Gathering Apron

Collecting eggs everyday is one my favorite activities and it is ALWAYS more fun when you get to wear something CUTE!!! This apron is adorable and will hold 12 eggs safely.  Even my boys will grab this when they head out to collect eggs.

10 More Chicken Coop Essentials to go . . .

10. Select Flaked Oyster Shell

Oyster Shell is a definite backyard coop essential to have on hand. It is a great source of calcium that should always be offered – chickens will eat it if they need more calcium. I keep mine in a small poultry feeder like that of #9. My chickens HATE the crushed but LOVE the flaked.

9. Little Giant Animal Mineral Feeder 3.5qt

This feeder is my favorite way to offer oyster shell to my girls. I try to keep it full at all times – chickens are smart – they know when they need more calcium – and they’ll eat it. You could certainly use it to offer grit, treats or whatever else you like . . . but it works GREAT for oyster shell.

8. Vetericyn plus – for pecking wounds, cuts, sores, etc.

Sad that this is amoung the backyard coop essentials – but it is. Every chicken tender should have this on hand! When chickens see/smell blood – they attack. It’s nature. This product helps wounds, cuts, sores, etc. so they can actually heal and other chickens won’t attack. Whether it’s re: pecking order, a predator attack – or determining who is the dominant roo – at some point you are going to need this and you’ll be grateful you have it on hand.

7. Excelsior Nesting Pads OR Roosty’s chicken nesting pads – easy, washable

For Nesting Pads – I have 2 Favorites – it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t share both. I live in Arizona. In the winter I use the washable Roosty’s chicken nesting pads and in the summer I utilize the Precision Pet by PetMate Excelsior Nesting Pads.

Bonuses to washable Nesting Pads : WASHABLE, soft for chickens, easy to clean; no need to buy anymore

Bonuses to Excelsior Nesting Pads : Chickens like to “Take Them Apart” and make their own Nests. They love to HIDE their Eggs in them. Excelsior Nesting Pads are soft. Feathers & Poo can be “shaken” off them.

6. Magjo Chicken Nest Box Herbs

I LOVE the way these smell – and my chickens LOVE to eat them. With just a handful – I can refresh the nesting boxes each week. (definitely a chicken coop essentials – believe me!)The herbs not only smell good – but are GOOD for the chickens to eat.

Are you ready for the Top 5 Backyard Coop Essentials?

5. Rent A Coop 5 gallon Chicken Waterer with 4 Nipples

I have tried EVERY waterer out there!! This is BY FAR my favorite. I have 10 girls and I refill this about every 5 days for them. The Nipples are ESSENTIAL!! We started with the cups and I would never go back – they are hard to clean and spill everywhere. If you want your girls to learn to use the nipples – take all other water sources OUT of the coop and you’ll be amazed at how quickly they learn to use them.

4. Amazon Basics Dog & Puppy Pads, Leak Proof, 5 layer pee pads

I use Puppy Pads in my coop in 2 ways and I SWEAR by them. 1. I have an omlet coop – and I use puppy pads under the roosting bars in the coop – it makes for quick and easy cleaning/emptying out of the poop drawer. 2. I use them in the bottom of a dog crate when one of my girls is in chicken jail. Again, makes for EASY cleaning because it’s just a simple change out.

3. First Saturday Lime 20 lbs

I LOVE First Saturday Lime – and use it once a month on you’ve got it – the First Saturday!!!!! We put it all along the outside and inside of the coop as well as put it along the fence in the backyard to help keep out insects/predators. It also helps with smell – it’s a purchase you will NOT regret!!

2. Treats:

My girls are spoiled. I give them treats everyday. I vary the treats I give them. Often, I make them myself – but that’s an article for another day. These are a few of their favorites I can just buy and distribute.

A. Harvest Delight Manna Pro Chicken Treats

I like to mix this with sprouts and any other “leftovers” I have for the chickens.  It smells delightful and I like to think it flavors what they are eating!!

B. Garden Delight Manna Pro Chicken Treats

This is also something I like to mix in with sprouts and extras.  Gives them variety.

C. Grubblies – Healthier than Mealworms for chickens

These are one of my chicken’s favorites.

#1 – Are you ready? Here it is!!

1. Grandpa’s Feeders – Automatic Chicken Feeder

I have tried all the Chicken Feeder’s out there – and THIS is the creme de la creme. It is the ONLY one you’ll ever want.  Two sizes are available. Do yourself a favor and grab the one that holds 40lbs – an entire bag of feed. It will feed 12 chickens for 10 days. I only have to refill it every 7-10 days; No rodents/birds can get in to eat any food; comes with a system to teach your birds how to use it – which is EASY and very efficient. It is worth EVERY penny and will save you SO much money in the long run. Take the plunge!! You won’t regret it.

So, where do YOU get your Backyard Coop Essentials? Which of these do you/not deem important for YOUR backyard coop?

TOP 5 BEST DIY Chicken Treats for Chickens ROUNDUP

I will fully admit it. GUILTY!! I spoil my chickens. I LOVE them and look forward to sharing a treat with them everyday. The way they come RUNNING towards the back door when I open it – will always make me giggle. They talk and talk and get SO excited when I bring out the afternoon treat – it never gets old. Many days it’s just a handful of mealworms or a bit of scratch. Ultimately yes, I make treats for chickens and these are some of my girls most favorites.

#1 DIY Chicken Treat

  • Florasippi Girl ‘s article about DIY Better Than Flock Block – This recipe is one of my girls MOST favorites and I LOVE it because it makes 2 blocks – 1 I can use right away and another I can freeze and use when needed. Uses MANY everyday ingredients you use EVERYDAY like: oats, cornmeal, flour, raisins, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, eggs, coconut oil – there were only a few things I didn’t have on hand Initially : Blackstrap Molasses & Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (click the links to grab these from Amazon)

#2 Treats for Chickens

  • Ellie and Her Chickens’ shares an easy, fun recipe for Chicken Seed Rolls even the littles can help make and hang up for the chickens. The chickens will LOVE it – not only for the food – but also as a boredom buster. Make a bunch of them at once and FREEZE them to pull out a few on a day when you don’t have time to make a special treat and you’ll make your ladies’ day! Hang these from the roof of your coop and they’ll be eating them up in no time. Best part of these is that you can use PB on a toilet paper roll and whatever seeds, food or dried fruit you have on hand. Some fun suggestions to use from Amazon: Hemp Harts & Chia Seeds – but seriously USE whatever you have on hand – poppy seeds, sesame seeds. These are some of the best and easiest treats for chickens.

#3 DIY Chicken Treats for Chickens

  • Fresh Eggs Daily shares a Peanut Butter Seed Cake that is perfect for when you chickens are molting in the Fall and need some extra protein to help those feathers come in a bit faster!! My chickens LOVE these and eat them up SO fast. Uses a bunch of items you probably already have at home including : coconut oil, cornmeal, unsalted peanuts and a few you MAY need to grab from Amazon like: unsalted PB, Black Oil Sunflower seeds & chopped dried cranberries.

#4 Treats for Chickens

  • Oatmeal Treat Balls for Chickens is a recipe created by Fresh Eggs Daily that my chickens can NEVER get enough of! As always, make a plate and freeze some for another day. Serve them fresh out of the oven or warm them up in the microwave before serving them.

#5 DIY Chicken Treats for Chickens

  • Chicken Crack by Florasippi Girl is just as it sounds – when you bring this out they ALL come running and eat every last drop . . . includes things like : crushed corn, black oil sunflower seeds, cinnamon, crushed red pepper, probiotic powder, minced garlic as well as 2 protein sources of your choice.

BONUS DIY Chicken Treat

BONUS DIY : Grow Your Own Sprouts!!! Raising Happy Chickens has an AMAZING article on sprouting lentils and mung beans. My girls LOVE sprouts – they are soooo healthy for them. They especially love it when I add Harvest Delight or Garden Delight to the sprouts. ( A little bit of scratch with a bunch of seasonings). My girls especially love the lentil sprouts. Just be sure to grab the organic, non-GMO ones!! (they are better for your ladies) I personally invested in this system from Amazon and I STILL love it. Comes HIGHLY Recommended.

Do YOUR chickens have a favorite treat that you DIY? DIY chicken treats for chickens are my love language & I would LOVE some new things to try – PLEASE share your ideas!!
