As with anything in life, to have healthy skin – you must take care of it. But in order to properly take care of YOUR skin – you have to know your skin type. As we age – our skin tends to become more dry than it was in our youth. Although this isn’t always true – don’t be surprized if your skin type has changed over time. This is totally normal. So, let’s get to it.
4 Basic Skin Types
There are 4 basic skin types. Some break it down to as many as 11 – but we are focusing on THE BASICS . . .
- Dry
- Normal to Dry
- Normal to Oily
- Oily to Acne
Skin type is determined by genetics. However it can definitely be affected by the environment you live in, what you eat and how you treat your body.
Let’s Break It Down: How to Know YOUR Skin Type
Normal skin is often referred to as “well-balanced”. People with normal skin may have some oil in the T zone – but overall skin is not too oily or too dry.
- pores are fine
- soft skin – almost feels like a velvet texture
- no blemishes
- NOT prone to being sensitive
- overall rosy colored complexion
Dry skin produces less oil than normal skin. Basically this means that it’s not able to hold in moisture and it has a difficult time protecting itself from environmental influences. Typically skin does get dryer as we age – almost half of all visits to dermotologists are done by those with dry skin. (craxy
- feels tight – even rough
- looks dull
- may be itchy or even scaly
Oily skin produces an abundance of oil.
- has a glossy shine
- pores are visible to the naked eye
- blemishes are often present
Acne can be present in all ages – but is most common in teenagers when hormones are rampant. Acne often vanishes after puberty – but not always. Adults in increasing numbers – esp. women often experience acne later into life.
- oily skin
- blackheads and whiteheads visible on skin
- scarring can be present from blemishes – may fade over time
- blemishes can appear on shoulders, neck AND back in addition to the face.
